Eye Health

The eye is the organ of vision that lies inside the orbital cavity, which protects the eye from injuries. People often refer to the eye as the window of the world. The eye’s main and important function is to detect light and convert it into an electrochemical impulse. The retina collects all types of information, including colors, shapes, patterns, and all other information, and then sends these waves into the brain.


What are Structure of the Eye?

The structure of the eye includes:

  • Eyeball (visual organ)
  • Orbital cavity (protect the eyeball)
  • The extraocular muscles of the eye control the direction of gaze.
  • The fascia and fat provide support to the eyeball.


Parts of the Eye

The structures that make up our eyes are as follows:

  • Cornea
  • Sclera
  • Conjunctiva
  • Limbus
  • Choroid
  • Ciliary body
  • Iris
  • Retina
  • Crystalline Lens
  • Pupil
  • Vitreous humour
  • Eyelid


The cornea is a transparent layer with a dome-type structure over your iris.


A dense fibrous structure that comprises a posterior layer


A thin, translucent membrane that connects the eyeball and the lid


Limbus is a 2mm wide transitional zone that contains trabecular meshwork.


The choroid is the vascular layer that provides nutrition to the retina.

Ciliary body

Through this process, the ciliary body produces aqueous humour.


The iris is a diaphragm that controls the amount of light entering the eye.


The retina contains the cell rods and cones, which convert light energy into electrical energy.

Crystalline Lens

The crystalline lens, which is biconvex and transparent in structure, is behind the iris and pupil.


The pupil is a small opening in the iris that regulates the amount of light entering the eye.

Vitreous humour

It is a jelly-like material between the lens and retina, which prevents it from collapsing.


Each lid contains a tarsal plate, providing mechanical protection against the following injuries:


Vision problem

The problems related to vision are known as vision problems or vision impairment. Vision impairment problems may be due to age-related changes in lenses, or they may be malignant.

Some common problems are given below:

  • Myopia (short-sightedness)
  • Hyperopia (long-sightedness)
  • Astigmatism refers to a condition where the focal point is different.
  • Presbyopia (insufficiency of accommodation)
  • Cataract (cloudiness of the crystalline lens)
  • Glaucoma is caused by an increase in intraocular pressure.

Disorders related to sclera

  • Scleritis (inflammation of the sclera)
  • Episcleritis (inflammatory disease of the episclera)

Retinal disorders

  • Diabetic retinopathy (a dysfunction of the retinal vasculature)
  • Hypertensive retinopathy (damage to retinal circulation due to high blood pressure)
  • Retinoblastoma (a malignant tumor originating from retinal cells)
  • Retinitis pigmentosa (which affects more rods than tan cones)
  • Retinopathy of prematurity (occurs in babies who have a high concentration of oxygen exposure)

Eyelid disorders

  • Chalazion (inflammation of the meibomian gland).
  • Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid margin)
  • Stye refers to an infection that affects the lash follicles and glands of Zeis and Moll.


Some Tips for Healthy Eyes

If we maintain healthy habits in our daily lives, we will reduce the risk of vision impairment problems. If we maintain eye hygiene and keep our eyes clean, we will reduce the risk of further eye infections.

  • Protect your eyes from UV radiation.
  • Limit your screen time and Take as much sleep as necessary for your health.
  • Eat healthy and add some green vegetables to your diet; it will boost your vision.
  • Avoiding smoking will reduce the risk of certain eye problems like cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
  • Drink a lot of water, which will hydrate the body and prevent the eyes from becoming dry.
